#UStoImpose10To12.5PercentTariffsOn60Economies
New U.S. Tariffs Hit 60 Economies: Global Markets Watch the Next Move A new chapter in global trade has begun as the United States introduces additional tariffs on 60 economies, creating fresh uncertainty for businesses, investors, and international markets. According to the announcement from the U.S.
Trade Representative (USTR), the new tariffs range between 10% and 12.5% under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
The policy replaces the previous 10% global import tariff and officially took effect on July 24 at 12:01 a.m.
ET.
The measures impact more than 99% of U.S. Trade volume, making them one of the broadest recent changes in global trade policy.
Several major economies are included in the updated framework, with the European Union, Japan, Switzerland, and South Korea facing tariffs between 10% and 12.5%.
Other trading partners will also be affected. Canada, Mexico, India, and the United Kingdom face a 10% tariff rate, while China faces a 12.5% tariff rate under the new structure. However, not every product category is included.
Essential sectors such as fuel, food, and fertilizers are exempt, along with goods already covered by specific tariffs on industries like automobiles, metals, and pharmaceuticals. Products protected under the USMCA trade agreement are also excluded. The biggest market question now is how companies and economies will respond.
Higher tariffs can influence supply chains, production costs, consumer prices, and corporate strategies.
Businesses that depend on international trade may need to reconsider sourcing and manufacturing decisions. For investors, trade policies remain a key factor affecting inflation expectations, currencies, commodities, and stock market sentiment. As global economies adjust to this new environment, negotiations and policy responses will likely shape the next phase of international trade. Will these tariffs boost domestic production, or could they create more pressure on global businesses and consumers?
