North Korea Arrests Its Own Elite Hacker Ring Over Crypto Laundering!
When we hear "North Korea" and "crypto laundering," it usually involves state-sponsored attacks on global DeFi protocols. But in a wild reversal, Pyongyang has just arrested an elite hacking ring for turning their skills against the state!
According to a new report from Cointelegraph and PANews, North Korean authorities dismantled a rogue cyber syndicate accused of infiltrating the country's own internal banking networks.
The Infiltration
The hacking ring successfully breached the internal networks of North Korea's Central Bank and Foreign Trade Bank, actively siphoning off critical state trade funds.
The operation was reportedly led by a veteran of a cyber warfare unit operating under North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB). He recruited top-tier IT graduates from Kim Chaek University of Technology to execute the heist.
Using encrypted communications, the suspects split the stolen state funds into smaller transactions, transferred them to overseas cryptocurrency wallets, and used intermediaries to convert the crypto into U.S. dollars near the border.
Pyongyang officials launched a massive investigation after detecting irregularities in foreign currency approvals and overseas IP access records. They raided a local safe house, seizing tens of thousands of dollars in equipment and arresting the hackers in the middle of laundering the funds.
