Brent Returns To 100 What Drove The Spike And What Comes Next For Markets On Gate

Brent crude is back above 100 and the move is fast, sharp and tied to Red Sea risk. On July 23 2026 Brent closed above 100.64, first print above 100 in nearly two months, up more than 6 percent on the day. WTI pushed toward 90. Oil is up almost 40 percent in July, on track for biggest monthly gain since March.

What pushed Brent back to triple digits.

One Houthi attacks on shipping. Iran backed Houthis said they hit two Saudi oil tankers trying to cross Bab al Mandeb, the Red Sea choke point that handled about 12 percent of world seaborne oil flow before war. One tanker hit overnight, reports say. Some vessels now avoid the strait, widening the supply crunch beyond Strait of Hormuz which still sees low flow after US Iran clash.

Two price path shows how fast sentiment flipped. Brent averaged around 106 in May, then 85 in June, down 22 from May and 32 from April peak. By July 1 it broke below 70 on ceasefire hopes. Reversal since was violent. Brent closed 84.23 on July 16, hit 91.42 on July 20, eased to 88.28 on ten day ceasefire talk, settled 94.07 Wednesday, then broke 100.64 Thursday. That is near 30 points in three weeks.

Three broader war risk. July 17 Kuwait power plant hit, July reports of Iran strikes, US Navy blocking Iran crude exports, and US pressure on Hormuz all keep risk premium high. Barclays lifted 2026 Brent view to 100 from 85 citing Hormuz impasse, with upside risk of 2, 7, 10 dollars if impasse lasts one, two, three months. Fitch sees 100 to 110 for May to July, then 80 in Aug and around 70 from Sep if Hormuz reopens by end July, with full year avg 87.

What 100 means for markets.

One inflation talk back. Stagflation chatter rose as oil bounced from 70 early July to 100 now. US 10 year near 4.69 percent. Fed meets July 28 to 29. Higher oil can keep rates higher longer.

Two equities and crypto split. Energy stocks rally, airlines and logistics lag. Crypto often moves inverse to oil spike at first, then tracks risk appetite. BTC held around 66000 zone during early tariff headlines, showing relative hold.

Three vol up. Brent jumped 7 percent Thursday, domestic crude futures up near 6 percent same day. Such gaps raise margin needs and liquidations in perp.

How to use Gate in oil at 100.

Gate offers 24/7 trading for spot and perp, plus yield on idle funds.

Step one track risk events. Watch Red Sea tanker flow, Hormuz reopen headlines and US Iran talks. Any ten day ceasefire headline can drop Brent 5 to 7 percent fast, as seen July 20 to 21.

Step two trade with low leverage. Brent at 100 after 40 percent monthly rise is prone to sharp pullbacks. Use Gate perp with small size, strict stop above 102 or below 95 depending on bias.

Step three keep cash working. Between oil moves, park USDT in GUSD on Gate. Base yield 3.8 percent plus Launchpool dual earn around 16 percent for AVNT, U, BOT pools. Mint GUSD with USDT at 1 to 1 on Gate. Base accrues daily in Spot or Earn.

Step four diversify. If you long energy via oil linked tokens, hedge with stable yield or BTC.

Outlook.

If Hormuz reopens by end July and Red Sea attacks ease, Fitch base sees Brent back to 80 in Aug and 70 from Sep. If impasse holds, Barclays keeps 100 avg with upside. Near term 95 to 105 range likely with headline driven spikes.

In short Brent return to 100 is supply shock plus war premium, not demand boom. Trade it with care on Gate, keep leverage low, keep idle funds in GUSD at 3.8 percent, and be ready for both spike and drop on next headline.
