According to Benzinga, venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya warned in a recent CNBC interview that a severe AI pricing war is imminent as well-capitalized tech giants undercut traditional AI developers. Palihapitiya compared generative AI compute to crude oil, introducing the concept of "one barrel of AI intelligence"—roughly equivalent to 1 million AI tokens. OpenAI charges $26 per barrel while Anthropic's latest model costs $56, but Musk's xAI offers $1 per barrel, with Meta and Google reportedly undercutting to $1.50 and $1 respectively, and Chinese competitors at $0.50. Palihapitiya argued such pricing disparities require "rational adjustment," as Meta and Alphabet possess vast existing infrastructure advantages over resource-constrained pure AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.
