Andrew Ng: U.S. AI Teams Adopting Chinese Technologies, China Leading on Open-Source Model Sharing Since 2022

According to his interview with Berggruen Institute on July 21, Andrew Ng, founder of Google Brain, stated that China has recently become more open in AI innovation than the United States. While the U.S. maintained a clear lead when ChatGPT launched in late 2022, China has rapidly closed the gap by investing in open-source models and freely releasing weights to global developers. Ng noted that American AI teams now widely read Chinese research papers and adopt technologies from them, creating a two-way knowledge-sharing dynamic between the two countries.
