Anthropic Warns U.S.-China AI Gap Narrowing to Months, Calls for Legislation Banning Model Distillation

According to Anthropic's policy document monitored by Beating, the AI company warned that the gap between U.S. and Chinese AI capabilities is narrowing faster than expected, with China's leading models now only months behind in capability despite a 12-24 month overall U.S. advantage. Anthropic called for U.S. legislation to ban model distillation attacks and increase enforcement against chip smuggling, citing large-scale use of fake accounts to extract innovations from American frontier models at low cost. The company disclosed that its Mythos Preview model, released in April, fixed more security vulnerabilities for Firefox in a single month than the total from the prior year.
