Chile Issues Hantavirus Health Alert as Fatality Rate Rises to 39%, Up from 18% in 2025

According to the Chilean Health Ministry, on July 28, Chile issued a public health alert for hantavirus due to rising infection fatality rates. The alert covers 13 of Chile's 16 regions and will remain in effect until July 31, 2027. As of last week, Chile had recorded 46 hantavirus cases in 2026 with 18 deaths, resulting in a fatality rate of 39%, compared to 18% in 2025. The virus is endemic in Chile and typically spreads through contact with rodents.
