China's Shipbuilding Orders Hit Record High, Up 173% in H1 2026; Global Market Share Exceeds 80%

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's shipbuilding industry recorded historic highs across all three key metrics in the first half of 2026. Vessel completion reached 36.5 million deadweight tons, up 51.2% year-over-year, while new order intake surged to 121.06 million tons, a 173.1% increase that exceeded the previous full-year record. Hand-held orders climbed to 363.25 million tons, up 54.9% year-over-year. In the three major ship types—bulk carriers, container ships, and oil tankers—China captured over 80% of international market share each.
