Coinbase Adopts Chinese AI Models GLM and Kimi, Cuts AI Spending by Half on June 26

According to CEO Brian Armstrong, Coinbase on June 26 set Chinese AI models GLM 5.2 (Zhipu) and Kimi 2.7 (Moonshot AI) as the default large language models for its internal engineers. Through intelligent routing, aggressive caching, and optimized context, the exchange reduced AI costs by approximately 50 percent while maintaining exponential growth in token usage. Cache hit rates improved from 5 percent to 60 percent following infrastructure improvements. Regular engineering tasks now primarily use the Chinese open-source models, while complex planning tasks retain access to frontier models.
