According to Coinbase's official incident report, a configuration update deployed on July 14 at 12:34 p.m. ET caused a misconfigurations in the Istio Ingress Gateway, resulting in a 50-minute service disruption lasting until 1:23 p.m. ET. The error stemmed from an undetected resource name conflict in the pre-production environment during a routine update intended to improve system performance.
The outage impacted multiple services including retail trading, deposits and withdrawals, Coinbase Card transactions, and Developer Platform onboarding. However, Coinbase confirmed that user funds remained secure throughout the incident. The gateway was restored at 1:20 p.m. ET, with most services recovering quickly as the system processed accumulated backlog tasks.
