Dylan Patel Predicts AI Inference Market Could Exceed Oil, OpenAI+Anthropic Need 100GW by 2030

According to SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel, speaking on July 1 during a Sequoia Capital podcast interview, AI inference will become one of the world's largest markets, potentially exceeding oil in scale and accounting for several percentage points of global GDP. Patel predicts that by 2030, combined computational power demand from OpenAI and Anthropic alone will surpass 100 gigawatts, with power constraints likely persisting long-term as task capabilities expand faster than computing growth. The SemiAnalysis team's InferenceX benchmark system shows inference costs declining approximately 60 times annually, with per-watt efficiency improvements of roughly 40 times.
