The Ethereum Foundation recently used AI agents to test blockchain software and discovered real bugs, including a critical flaw designated CVE-2026-34219, according to field notes published by its Protocol Security team. The vulnerability was found in gossipsub, the messaging layer used by Ethereum clients, which allowed remote systems to trigger node crashes. However, the exercise also revealed a significant limitation: AI agents generated convincing false positive reports that appeared technically sound but described non-existent or impractical vulnerabilities. The Foundation concluded that AI tools expand the search surface for bugs but cannot replace human review, which remains essential to distinguish genuine software flaws from fabricated findings.
