EU Launches Investigation into Meta Over Exploitative Design Targeting Minors, Risks 6% Revenue Fine

According to EU regulatory sources, the European Commission is preparing preliminary investigation findings against Meta for using exploitative design techniques on Facebook and Instagram that harm minors, according to reports. The investigation was formally launched in May 2024 under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Regulators allege Meta's algorithmic "rabbit hole" feature continuously feeds content to lock user attention, and question whether the platform adequately prevents children's access and implements sufficient age verification. If violations are confirmed and Meta fails to remediate, the company faces potential fines up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
