Experimental Monkey Prices Surge to 200,000 Yuan as CRO Industry Orders Rebound, Supply Shortfall Widens to 15,000-20,000 Units Annually

According to Zhitong Finance, experimental monkey prices have surged to 200,000 yuan per animal in recent weeks as drug research activity accelerates. Market demand for laboratory monkeys in 2026 is projected to exceed 60,000 units, while domestic supply remains constrained. Brokerage estimates indicate the annual supply shortfall will expand to 15,000-20,000 units through 2028, with macaque prices ranging between 150,000-200,000 yuan and rhesus monkeys at approximately 120,000 yuan each.

The CRO industry is experiencing broad order momentum. Top contractors including WuXi AppTec, Concord Pharmaceuticals, and Shoal Biotech reported significant first-quarter order growth in 2026. Specific figures include WuXi AppTec's order backlog increasing 23.6% year-over-year and Concord's mid-year new orders climbing over 30%, driven by rising demand for complex biologics including ADCs and small-molecule therapeutics.
