A security source confirmed the incident, which prompted road closures and security measures in the area. Reuters witnesses heard the blast and saw heavy smoke rising. Macron's motorcade had left the location before the explosion occurred. The Syrian presidency subsequently confirmed that President Bashar al-Assad met with Macron at the presidential palace following the incident.
