Germany Abandons F126 Frigate Plan After Post-WWII Budget Crisis, Pivots to MEKO A-200 Vessels

According to Germany's Defense Ministry on June 24, the country abandoned its plan to procure six F126-class frigates due to schedule delays and cost overruns. The ministry announced it will instead contract eight MEKO A-200 frigates from domestic defense contractor ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, with a total investment of 11.6 billion euros (approximately $20 billion). The original F126 program, budgeted at 12.8 billion euros for six 10,000-ton displacement vessels, had already consumed 2.3 billion euros before cancellation. The MEKO A-200 vessels will displace 4,000 tons and measure 120 meters in length.
