Google reported that its annual electricity consumption rose 37 percent in 2025—the largest year-on-year increase in the company's history, driven by accelerating AI data center construction and operations. Despite the surge, the tech giant reduced operational carbon emissions by 2 percent through continued purchases of clean energy.
Google's data centers consumed 42 million megawatt-hours of electricity in 2025, compared to 30.6 million megawatt-hours in 2024, according to the company's sustainability report. Total electricity usage has climbed more than 250 percent since 2019, reflecting growth in Google Cloud, YouTube streaming, and AI infrastructure expansion.
