Iran Halts U.S. Talks on June 21, Closes Strait of Hormuz; Oil Prices Surge on Geopolitical Tensions

According to Tasnim News Agency and Jin10 Futures, Iran's delegation halted negotiations with the U.S. in Switzerland on June 21 in protest of threats from President Trump. Earlier that day, Trump warned Iran to immediately cease proxy actions in Lebanon or face renewed and more severe U.S. strikes. The Iranian armed forces announced on June 20 that it would close the Strait of Hormuz to all vessel traffic in response to what it characterized as U.S. failure to fulfill ceasefire commitments and continued Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon. The statement indicated this closure represents the first response measure, with further steps to follow if military operations persist. International crude oil prices opened higher on June 22 as investors digested the escalating geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding the stalled talks.
