Iraq and Syria Sign Deal to Rebuild 800-km Cross-Border Oil Pipeline on July 18

According to Iraq's Ministry of Oil, Iraq and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on July 18 to rebuild a cross-border crude oil pipeline. The pipeline, originally constructed in 1952, stretches approximately 800 kilometers from Kirkuk in Iraq to Banias on Syria's Mediterranean coast. The pipeline suffered severe damage during the Iran-Iraq War and the Iraq War and has remained out of service for decades. Iraq's Ministry of Oil stated the project will diversify Iraq's crude oil export routes and strengthen regional energy infrastructure and security.
