Japan Confirms High-Value Rare Earths in Seabed Near Remote Island, 54% Medium-Heavy Grade

According to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan confirmed today that rare earth elements, including medium-heavy grade materials critical for high-tech manufacturing, were found in seabed mud samples retrieved from near Minami-Torishima Island. The exploration vessel recovered approximately 50 tons of mud from depths of about 6,000 meters in the exclusive economic zone, with analysis showing 54% of the rare earth content classified as medium-heavy grade, primarily yttrium and gadolinium used in electric vehicle motors, semiconductors, and defense applications. Japan plans to conduct large-scale trial mining beginning in February 2027 for approximately one month, with the goal of evaluating industrialization by the end of fiscal year 2027.
