Long-Term Unemployed Americans Surge to Nearly 2 Million, Up 4 Percentage Points in June

According to Wall Street Journal and U.S. Department of Labor data, nearly 2 million Americans have been unable to find work for at least six consecutive months. In June, long-term unemployed individuals (continuously jobless for 27 weeks or more) represented 27.3% of all unemployed persons, up 4 percentage points from a year earlier. This ratio approaches the highest level since late 2021. Weakening hiring activity means more people continue entering long-term unemployment despite some finding new jobs.
