NATO Announces Multi-Billion Dollar Defense Investment Plan, Over $40B for Counter-UAS Capabilities

According to Jin10, NATO announced on July 7 a comprehensive defense investment and procurement plan totaling hundreds of billions of dollars during its summit. NATO member states will invest over $40 billion over the next five years to build counter-unmanned aerial system capabilities, with plans to increase the number of trained drone operators by five-fold by the end of 2027.

The plan includes Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Norway procuring Northrop Grumman's MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft, while 11 NATO members will acquire Sweden's Saab GlobalEye early warning aircraft. Additionally, U.S.-based Lockheed Martin and Germany's Rheinmetall signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly produce the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) in Germany, marking the first production of the short-range missile system outside the United States.
