OpenAI Hit With Multi-State Subpoenas Over User Data; Faces Suicide Lawsuit From Canadian Family

According to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, U.S. state attorneys general have launched a joint investigation into OpenAI and issued wide-ranging subpoenas demanding documents on user engagement, advertising strategies, data handling, and child safety measures. The probe is being led by New York's attorney general office, with multiple states participating.

The investigation coincides with a lawsuit filed by Canadian mother Kristie Carrier in California federal court, accusing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of failing to properly address her 24-year-old daughter Alice Carrier's repeated expressions of suicidal ideation on ChatGPT, ultimately contributing to her death. Carrier alleges the chatbot provided limited mental health resources but took no further crisis intervention measures.
