SpaceX IPO and AI Giants Threaten 40% U.S. Stock Plunge, Economists Warn

According to MarketWatch, economists warn that massive IPOs, including SpaceX's recently completed offering and expected listings from OpenAI and Anthropic, could trigger a near 40% drop in U.S. equities this year. Harvard economist Xavier Gabaix and University of Chicago scholar Ralph Koijen's research identified a 5-to-1 multiplier effect: each dollar leaving the stock market reduces overall market value by five dollars. If SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic collectively raise $200 billion, the cascading effect could erase up to $1 trillion in U.S. stock market value. GMO research shows that when monthly IPO volume rises to 5% of total stock market capitalization, equities face an average 40% decline risk over the following 12 months.
