According to Ars Technica, SpaceX successfully launched its Starship vehicle on Friday (July 25) and demonstrated key progress toward orbital capability. The company may attempt tower catch recovery, where the vehicle returns to the launch site to be caught mid-air by the launch structure, as soon as the next flight.
However, experts highlight an unresolved challenge: Starship's thermal protection system. The vehicle is protected by approximately 18,000 ceramic tiles during atmospheric reentry. Dan Rasky, a former NASA engineer who co-invented heat shield material for Crew Dragon, told Ars Technica that SpaceX's current approach may prove a dead-end for missions requiring full rapid reusability, citing the need for frequent, cost-effective operations.
