Texas Residents Lost $56.8 Million to Cryptocurrency ATM Scams Over Past Year

According to Cryptopolitan, Texas residents lost $56.8 million to cryptocurrency ATM scams over the past year, affecting approximately 1,200 victims. The typical fraud scheme involves scammers impersonating government officials or company employees via phone, falsely claiming victims have legal issues or outstanding debts, then instructing them to visit crypto ATMs to convert cash to cryptocurrency and transfer funds to designated addresses. Due to the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions and their degree of anonymity, fund recovery is extremely difficult once the transfer is completed.
