U.S. Charitable Giving Topped $617.2 Billion Last Year, Up 5.7%, Boosted by Megadonors and Bequests

According to the Giving USA Foundation report released this week, U.S. charities received an estimated $617.2 billion in donations last year, up 5.7% from the prior year. This marks the first time annual giving has exceeded $600 billion in the report's 60-year history. Individual donors contributed $394.2 billion, though this grew only 1.4% in inflation-adjusted terms. In contrast, charitable bequests—gifts made after death—surged 16.6% to $62.19 billion. The increase was driven by ultra-wealthy donors; nine individuals accounted for $22.32 billion, including MacKenzie Scott's $6.65 billion contribution. Nearly one-third of the bequest increase came from the late Paul Allen's estate, which established a $3.1 billion fund for science and technology research.
