According to Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA), the US dollar-Taiwan dollar exchange rate hit 32.464 on July 17, the strongest level since April 25, 2025. On July 20 morning, the rate briefly surpassed the 32.40 level, reaching 32.390 by 1:41 PM local time.
The surge followed massive foreign investor selloffs. On July 17, foreign investors recorded a net sale of 189.04 billion Taiwan dollars in Taiwan's stock market—the largest single-day net sale on record. The Taiwan Stock Index dropped 6.47%, marking the biggest single-day decline ever. TSMC fell 7.29% amid concerns over margin pressure from heavy capital expenditures.
