According to Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder outlined a multi-year Lean Ethereum initiative on Saturday, describing it as the network's third major iteration rivaling the Merge, with a timeline of three to four years. He stated that "almost every major piece of the protocol will be replaced," spanning transaction confirmation mechanisms, quantum-resistant cryptography, transaction finality, and data storage. Buterin added that Ethereum's Hegota upgrade, slated as the second major upgrade of 2026, is likely the last pre-Lean fork, meaning nearly all subsequent upgrades will be part of this comprehensive rebuild.
