According to CNBC, Waymo notified Uber on Friday that it will launch a standalone app in Atlanta and Austin in January 2028, ending the exclusive robotaxi arrangement in these two markets. Hundreds of Waymo robotaxis will continue to be available through the Uber app through at least May 2028 under their existing contract. A Waymo spokesperson said the move reflects the need to offer riders "choice in how they experience this technology." Uber shares dropped more than 4% following the announcement.
