According to federal court filings released on July 17, major music publishers including Universal Music and Sony Music have agreed to settle their copyright dispute with X. Both parties jointly filed motions with federal courts in Tennessee and Texas to dismiss their lawsuits, with the court ordered to dismiss "with prejudice," preventing either side from refiling the same claims in the future.
The original dispute centered on X allowing users to post copyrighted music without authorization, allegedly infringing hundreds of copyrights. X had countersued, accusing the publishers of anticompetitive collusion and forcing the platform to pay excessive licensing fees. Neither X nor the publishers have disclosed specific settlement terms.
