Australia Introduces Mandatory Clean Energy Standards for Large AI Data Centers

The Australian Government introduced enforceable standards requiring large AI data centres to meet stricter energy, water, and infrastructure obligations. Operators must support new power supplies through renewable energy, improve water efficiency, and consult with communities.

A newly established Office of AI will oversee implementation, with the standards scheduled for National Cabinet consideration in August and parliamentary legislation in early 2027. Companies combining AI and digital asset infrastructure may also be affected by these power-intensive facility requirements.
