Consensys Mistakenly Granted North Korea-Linked Developer Access to Systems for One Month

According to Consensys Chief Legal Officer Matt Corva, the blockchain company earlier this year mistakenly onboarded a software developer using an alias through a third-party service provider. The developer, identified as being linked to North Korea, was granted access to parts of Consensys systems for approximately one month as a contractor. After discovering the security threat, Consensys revoked access and launched a full investigation, concluding that no assets or data were compromised, no malicious code was deployed, and user security was unaffected. The company temporarily halted product releases during the investigation and plans to reassess its engineering and development outsourcing practices.
