ECB President Lagarde Defends June Rate Hike as Prudent Decision, Not Preventive Move

According to Jin10, ECB President Christine Lagarde stated on June 30 that the 25-basis-point rate hike in June was a prudent decision based on economic and inflation conditions at the time, not a preventive measure against future risks. Without the hike, inflation would have remained above the 2% target in 2027 and 2028, she said. Lagarde emphasized that the ECB will maintain a data-dependent, meeting-by-meeting approach to monetary policy rather than relying on forward guidance.
