Korea KOSPI VI Circuit Breaker Triggers 29,357 Times in H1 2026, Record High

According to Korea Exchange, the volatility circuit breaker mechanism (VI) was triggered 29,357 times in the first half of 2026, surpassing the previous record of 24,401 cases in H1 2020. VI is activated when individual stock prices fluctuate sharply, forcing a 2-minute call auction trading period. The increased volatility reflects heightened market activity as the KOSPI index surged from above 5,000 in January to near 9,000 by late June. Separately, investment warning designations increased sharply: investment risk designations reached 43 cases (up 20-fold from 2 cases in H1 2025), investment warning designations totaled 379 cases (up 10-fold from 35 cases), and caution designations rose to 2,944 cases from 271.
