KOSPI-Nasdaq 100 Correlation Hits Near 2-Year High at 0.46, Emerging as AI Sentiment Indicator

According to Bloomberg, South Korea's KOSPI index correlation with Nasdaq-100 has risen to 0.46 over the past 60 days, approaching a two-year high and roughly three times the five-year average of 0.16. The correlation reached its highest level since 1990 on July 7, signaling that global fund managers increasingly view Korean tech stocks—particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—as a leading indicator for AI investment sentiment. After KOSPI plunged nearly 9% on July 13 amid concerns about AI demand prospects, SK Hynix ADR fell over 9%, dragging down the broader U.S. semiconductor sector. Institutions including JPMorgan Asset Management and PineBridge now treat KOSPI and SK Hynix ADR performance as key indicators of AI and semiconductor risk appetite ahead of U.S. market sessions.
