OpenAI Unveils Jalapeño Inference Chip After 9-Month Development, Gigawatt Deployment Planned for Late 2026

According to Beating, OpenAI unveiled Jalapeño, its first AI inference acceleration chip tailored for large language models, following a 9-month development cycle from concept to tape-out—a record for custom ASIC design. The chip was co-developed with Broadcom handling silicon implementation and Celestica managing system integration. Jalapeño is designed to boost performance and reduce computational costs for ChatGPT, APIs, and future AI agents. OpenAI plans to begin large-scale deployment at gigawatt-level data centers in partnership with major tech firms by the end of 2026.
