Rocket Lab Acquires Iridium Communications for $8 Billion in Historic Space Deal

According to Global News Wire, Rocket Lab announced Monday it is acquiring satellite communications company Iridium Communications for approximately $8 billion in cash and stock. The deal pairs Rocket Lab, a launch company founded by Peter Beck, with Iridium, a decades-old profitable business operating a constellation of 80 satellites in low Earth orbit. Iridium currently serves 2.55 million customers worldwide and holds substantial L-band spectrum, which it uses for telecommunications services and is developing as a positioning and timing alternative to GPS. Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said the combined entity would form "a fully integrated, self-launching space superpower" enabling faster deployment of new space-based services.
