Russia Deploys Nuclear-Capable Tu-160 Bombers on 16-Hour Mission Near Britain, NATO Scrambles F-35 Fighters

On June 23, Russia deployed nuclear-capable Tu-160 strategic bombers on a 16-hour mission over the Barents and Norwegian Seas, directly north of Britain's Shetland Islands, according to Daily Star. NATO forces immediately responded by scrambling F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets from the Norwegian Air Force to intercept and shadow the Russian aircraft. The Tu-160s, flanked by MiG-31 fighters, executed mid-air refueling maneuvers during the operation. Each Tu-160 can carry up to 45 tonnes of weaponry, including both conventional and nuclear long-range cruise missiles. The Russian defense ministry claimed the flight was routine, though the timing coincided with renewed Ukrainian bombardments that left six civilians injured.
