On Friday, July 17, U.S. President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada, accusing the Canadian government of mismanaging forests and allowing wildfire smoke to cause air quality degradation across the U.S. Trump stated on Truth Social that Canada has failed to properly maintain forests and clear forest debris, allowing "dirty, polluted and unhealthy air" to enter the United States, and said pollution costs "must be added to the tariffs Canada currently pays."
Canada is currently battling 897 active wildfires, with more than 12 U.S. states under air quality alerts. New York City's air quality index reached approximately 160, marking the city's fourth-worst air quality among major global cities. The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported that fewer than 100 of the active fires are classified as controlled.
