U.S. Ambassador Warns Some European NATO Allies Falling Short on Defense Spending Pledges Ahead of Trump Meeting

According to Jin10, on July 1, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO warned that some European allies are not meeting their defense spending commitments. NATO leaders agreed last year at The Hague summit to increase defense-related spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 under pressure from President Trump. Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. special envoy, stated that countries including Poland, Nordic nations, the Baltic states, and Germany are leading the way, but others are lagging behind with insufficient current spending or no credible path to achieve the Hague defense commitment.
