U.S. Department of Justice Determines TikTok Downloads on Federal Devices No Longer Violate Law on July 19

According to French Radio International (RFI), the U.S. Department of Justice determined on July 19 that the federal law previously prohibiting TikTok installation on federal government devices no longer applies to the current version offered in the United States. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel stated in a memo to White House counsel that Congress originally targeted versions with the same "problematic ownership characteristics" associated with ByteDance and related entities. Individual federal agencies now have discretion to decide whether to permit TikTok on official devices and may independently prohibit its use based on workplace efficiency and employee management considerations.
