U.S. Stock Short Positions Hit Record 9.0% on NYSE in Late June, Highest Since 2010

According to The Kobeissi Letter, short positions on the New York Stock Exchange reached a record 9.0% in late June, marking the highest level since tracking began. S&P 500 component short positions rose to approximately 3.7% of float, and Russell 3000 short positions climbed to about 6.1%, both approaching 16-year highs. Both metrics have risen continuously since early 2025.
