According to Bloomberg, the correlation between South Korea's KOSPI index and the Nasdaq 100 has surged to 0.46 over the past 60 days, nearly triple the five-year average of 0.16, as the Korean tech-heavy index increasingly serves as a leading indicator for global AI trading. International investors now monitor SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics stock movements before U.S. market opens to gauge daily market direction.
The elevated correlation stems from these companies' dominance in AI memory chips and rising leveraged trading activity. Tigress Financial Partners' Ivan Feinseth told Bloomberg that SK Hynix and Samsung are now key reference points for Wall Street traders, while PineBridge Investments' Hani Redha noted that global fund managers now closely track Korean tech stocks and their U.S. ADRs. JPMorgan Asset Management's Tai Hui stated that Korea has become an essential component of global asset allocation amid the AI wave.
