Ransomware Hacker Pleads Guilty to $15M Bitcoin Extortion Scheme on July 8

According to federal prosecutors, on July 8, Karen Serobovich Vardanyan, a 34-year-old Armenian national extradited from Ukraine, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and computer fraud for his role in Ryuk ransomware attacks conducted from November 2019 through April 2020. The campaign collected approximately 1,610 bitcoin, or more than $15 million, extorted from U.S. victims including a Michigan company that paid 200 bitcoin to regain access to its encrypted network. Vardanyan faces up to five years in prison for conspiracy and up to 10 years for computer fraud, with sentencing scheduled for September 22, 2026. The plea agreement requires him to provide more than $1.1 million in restitution.
