South Korea's Top Department Store Operators' Stock Plunge 10-13% on July 20 Amid Profit-Taking

According to Yonhapnews, on July 20, shares of South Korea's major department store operators fell sharply. Lotte Shopping dropped 10.16%, Hyundai Department Store fell 13.34%, and Shinsegae declined 9.85%. The KOSPI Distribution Index fell 6.27%, outpacing the broader KOSPI's 4.46% decline. Analysts attribute the selloff to profit-taking after strong year-to-date gains, with Lotte Shopping up 93.67%, Hyundai Department Store up 76.06%, and Shinsegae up 136.07% since the start of 2026. Recent weakness in the KOSPI has also reduced the wealth effect, which had boosted department store consumption as household stock holdings surged to 1,849 trillion won in Q1.
