U.S. Federal Budget Deficit Widens to $1.37 Trillion in FY2026, Up 2% YoY, Driven by Tariff Refunds

According to the U.S. Department of Treasury, the federal budget deficit widened to $1.37 trillion for the first nine months of fiscal year 2026, marking the first expansion since the fiscal year began. The deficit increased 2% compared to the same period in 2025. In June alone, the monthly deficit reached $120 billion, with the rise driven by large-scale tariff refunds following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared previous tariffs unlawful.
