According to dpa, Jens Spahn, parliamentary group chairman of Germany's Alliance Party, resigned on July 18 citing personal circumstances. In a statement to party members, Spahn said he realized that "personal happiness and public office cannot be reconciled," prompting his decision to step down. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who also heads the Christian Democratic Union, called Spahn's resignation "correct and inevitable."
