OpenAI Releases Jalapeño, Custom AI Chip Designed by AI, in Record 9 Months

OpenAI released Jalapeño, its first custom artificial intelligence chip designed with assistance from its own AI models, in just 9 months—breaking the industry standard of 18 to 24 months for advanced semiconductor development. The processor, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) optimized specifically for large language model inference, was engineered through collaboration with Broadcom on chip implementation and Celestica on board and rack integration. According to the company, Jalapeño is compatible with large language models across the industry and has already successfully run GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark in engineering samples, with frequency and power consumption meeting production targets. The chip's accelerated development was enabled by AI-assisted design and verification, which streamlined the typically time-consuming design-validation-modification cycles that constitute the majority of semiconductor development timelines.
